Trishawman off on his quest

BANDA HILIR - After months of planning and preparation, 'trishawman' Frankie Tan finally took off on his quest to cycle more than 600 kilometers from Melaka to Penang.

Not only will his enormous effort bring more understanding to the less fortunates, it can also be seen as an effort to bridge Melaka and Penang, both which are heritage cities acknowledged by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (Unesco).

Although the 600 plus journey is expected to take about a month to be completed, apart from all the uncertainties and challenges which he may face along the way, modest Tan was unperturbed and is determined to complete the task.

Scores of friends, mostly all were dressed in a special black t-shirt to commemmorate the event, were present to see him off and to provide him with moral support.

Chief Minister, Datuk Seri Mohd Ali Rustam, who flagged off the 'trishawman' was taken on a beca ride to the Melaka Tengah police station nearby before the flagging off.

When he was introduced to representatives of the four charitable organisations which will benefit from the trishaw ride, Mohd Ali promptly announced that each of them will be given RM5,000.

He also announced that the State Government will assist the Melaka's National Council for the Blind to secure an office building somewhere in Pengkalan Rama.

The four charitable organisations are National Council for the Blind, Malaysia; Women’s Aid Organisation (WAO), WINGS, Melaka—Early Intervention Centre and Melaka Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.

Mohd Ali also did not miss the opportunity to have his photograph taken with Tan and his supporters in front of the famous A'Famosa fort.

Speaking to reporters earlier, Tan said all proceeds will go directly to the four organisations as he is bearing the entire cost of the trip.

He said the main reason of the event was to get all Malaysians to play their part in helping the less fortunates.

"I am just playing a small part. I hope what I am doing today will somehow encourage others to come forward and help," he added.

Tan said he will be stopping over at several locations along the way where he will be spreading the word on charitable works apart from promoting Melaka as a tourist destination.

Apart from that, he said, he will also be collecting photographs along the way for his 'United Faces of Malaysia' book which will be published soon.

"I would like to thank everyone for their support and prayers," he added.
